Pancake Tuesday – Not like your Ordinary Tuesday

In my childhood there came a Tuesday once in a year when I was always presented with a delightful treat of pancake’s prepared by my grandmother.

Though I never knew why pancakes were made but just the inclusion of something different always sparked me up.

So why Pancakes? On a Tuesday!!!

It was after many years (when I was receiving confirmation) that I came to know that the Tuesday following Ash Wednesday is known as  Pancake Tuesday or Shrovetide  Tuesday, but sadly people have lost the true resemblance and meaning of this day.

The expression “shrove” which is the future tense of the word shrive which actually means to “confess” so then what has pancakes to do with confession??

Well traditionally people used the day before the start of Lent i-e is Ash Wednesday to use up all the rich food such as eggs, milk, sugar etc.

This was in context with the teachings of the Church which invited the faithful to adhere to plainer foods during this season,  also there were many people who taken this day as a point to self-examine their lives and to seek spiritual growth, asking God to help them attain this feat.

The Dichotomy in Society – We all Suffer from it

Today’s society comes really to tell us that Lent, fasting, indulgence are all things which limit us (keep us away from the true happiness of life) this dichotomy is well presented in the painting of Pieter Bruegel named The Fight between Carnival and Lent.

It portrays in truth the society and the stance of the church its traditions and how it always seeks to open its arms towards all humanity.
